We are seeking a Summer Research Intern with our Navigation and Survey Research team.
Location: Candidates can be in-person in Iowa City, IA or remote for the 10-week internship.
Duration: The internship is scheduled to run from Monday June 3, 2024 to Friday August 9, 2024, but can be flexible for the right candidate.
For this position, we anticipate offering an hourly rate of $23.00. The position is not incentive nor benefits eligible.
The summer research intern will work with Navigation and Survey Research team members, within the Behaviors and Skills Measurement group. The Navigation and Survey research team assists learners in “finding their way” along their education and career journeys by conducting research on ACT’s navigation tools (e.g., the ACT Interest Inventory), developing career planning measures, and investigating the conditions that support effective education and career decisions and outcomes. The survey research component of the team focuses on providing important insights into “student voice” – students’ perspectives and thoughts about current issues in education and workforce. This position is for someone looking to gain research experience working with researchers who have diverse backgrounds in psychology (e.g., educational psychology, I/O psychology) and education.
In addition to gaining experience by working with current Navigation and Survey Research team members to potentially create and refine assessments, surveys, and supporting materials, candidates will have the opportunity to participate in original research studies. Successful candidates will be matched to research studies in their field of study that align with their research interests. Possible research studies for Summer 2024 include, but are not limited to:
- Exploring new methods for measuring important aspects of career planning (e.g., Experience)
- Refining existing career planning assessments (e.g., Work Values measure)
- Exploring the use of big data to provide interest-related insights to students
What you will be working on:
- Participate in original research studies related to developing and examining the validity and efficacy of assessments
- Participate in original research studies investigating stakeholder perceptions
- Clean and analyze data
- Write and edit literature reviews
- Design, create, and revise reports
- Run cognitive lab and focus group studies
This could be the job for you if you have (minimum requirements):
- BA in psychology, educational psychology, or related field
- Must be working toward Ph.D. in education, educational psychology, personality psychology, counseling psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, or related field
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word
- Proficient in statistical software (SAS or R preferred)
- Excellent writing skills
- Excellent teamwork skills
- Strong people skills

The summer research intern will work with the Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning (SEAL) team members within the Behavior and Skills Measurement group. The SEAL team consists of researchers in personality psychology, social psychology, educational psychology, quantitative psychology, and clinical psychology, and conducts research related to the development and assessment of social and emotional and 21st century skills. The team supports ACT’s Mosaic and WorkKeys products. The mission of ACT’s Measurement Research and Development group is to establish ACT’s authority as a trusted leader in the field of educational research and to use this expertise and knowledge to increase the efficacy and equity of our products and solutions.
In addition to gaining experience by working with current SEAL team members to create and refine assessments and learning materials, candidates will have the opportunity to design and conduct original research studies. Successful candidates will be matched to research studies in their field of study that matches their research interests. Possible research studies for Summer 2024 include, but are not limited to:
- Examining the validity and reliability of assessments of social and emotional skills
- Analyzing data related to SEL and ACT scores of students, including those receiving special education services
- Developing and conducting studies related to content validity of SEL curriculum courses
- Developing and conducting research related to 21st century skills, such as self-directed learning, critical thinking, and creative thinking
- Refining existing items and assessments of social and emotional skills
What you will be working on:
- Design and execute original research studies examining the validity and efficacy of social and emotional skill assessments
- Design and execute original research studies investigating 21st century skill constructs
- Data cleaning and analysis
- Write and edit literature reviews
- Report design, creation, and revision
- Running cognitive lab and focus group studies
- Preparing and co-authoring submissions for publication or conference presentations based on research conducted

The summer research intern will work with Validity and Efficacy Research team members, within the Academic Knowledge Measurement (AKM) group. Validity and Efficacy Research specializes in investigating and documenting the value of ACT products by researching the appropriateness of their proposed uses as well as their effectiveness in improving intended learner outcomes. The larger AKM team at ACT consists of researchers in psychometrics, validity and efficacy, and content development supporting the ACT and PreACT suite of assessments. This position is for someone looking to gain applied research experience working with senior validity and efficacy researchers.
In addition to gaining experience by working with current Validity and Efficacy Research team members to create and refine assessments and learning materials, candidates will have the opportunity to design and conduct original research studies. Successful candidates will be matched to research studies in their field of study that matches their research interests. Possible research studies for Summer 2024 include, but are not limited to:
- Recreating and/or reconceptualizing validity and efficacy studies in support of ACT’s suite of assessments
- Creation, administration, and analysis of surveys to examine stakeholder perspectives on current issues in educational assessment and policies
- Investigating disparities in access to test preparation resources among students from different demographic backgrounds, and the possible affect on test scores and college admissions outcomes
- Examine how access to resources and support services in high schools influences students' college preparation and readiness
- Explore perceived barriers to college access among students from different demographic backgrounds
