    Are you passionate about solving big scientific problems in education through innovative technology and working in a highly multi-disciplinary collaborative environment? Would you like to know more about how computer vision, affective computing and machine learning are helping create new forms of learning and assessment tools?     ACTNext has an opening for a Machine Learning Research Scientist in the AI and Machine Learning group. This is an excellent opportunity to be a part of a research and development team and make an impact with innovative education technology.


    Typical work-related activities include:

    • Using multidisciplinary research and advances in AI and Machine Learning participate in creating a new generation of learning and assessments. These may include digital learning experiences such as educational games and various forms of behavioral and in vivo assessments of complex cognitive and social-emotional learning skills. 
    • Conduct research and development using multi-sensory data including audio and video, and multimodal analytics such as computer vision, NLP, multimodal and psychometric analysis to build advanced dynamic models of student learning and engagement. 



    • MS in Computer Science specializing in machine learning or related areas. Ph.D. preferred.
    • Publication record in the top-tier international research venues in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, NLP or related areas.
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired


    • Expertise in machine learning, probabilistic graphical models required
    • Experience with deep learning models including RNNs, LSTM, GANs, CNN, etc., required
    • Experience using cloud computing for machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as AWS SageMaker, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, etc.
    • Experience in educational applications of machine learning is a plus. 
    • Experience that includes pursuit of or collaboration with interdisciplinary projects, transferring techniques to a new context or connecting scientific fields that are usually separate required.
    • Demonstrated participation in dissemination activities through the publications of research papers in peer review journals required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Solid programming skills utilizing Python and/or R, Java, C, C++ required
    • Self-motivated and self-driven
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and work as part of a team
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills required
    • Results-oriented and innovative

    This position ideally will be located at our Iowa City, IA headquarters, however, we may consider other ACT locations-Lakewood, CO, or NYC, NY.
