    Responsibilities

    Implement a research agenda which integrates the most recent findings from research in learning sciences with best practices in applied studies and principled research design. Lead and/or participate in the application of learning models, methods, and measures to optimize experiences in diverse education and work contexts. Apply learner-centered design approaches to frame problems around learner’s experiences. Co-develop frameworks and research syntheses addressing the application of learning sciences in various contexts (e.g., digital environment). Use design-based research approaches to conduct studies, develop effective solutions and support implementation of best practices. Seek out and participate in internal/external consulting and partnership activities as a subject matter expert. Work collaboratively with staff in Research and across ACT to support current and future initiatives across a wide spectrum of areas (e.g., core academic subjects, general cognitive skills, socio-emotional learning, education and career navigation). This position requires strong attention to detail, collaborative skills, and communication skills. 

     

    Typical work-related activities include:

    • Work collaboratively with staff in Learning, Assessment, & Navigation Experiences and across areas in Research to design, develop, and collect evidence to realize the potential of learning experiences for improving engagement, learning, and assessment in diverse contexts
    • Collaborate with ACT staff in thought leadership and research on approaches to learning, instruction, cognition, and other areas related to the learning sciences
    • Participate in design, development and implementation of research projects, studies, and collaborations needed to support current and future products and services grounded in the learning sciences
    • Participate in the growth of the organization’s capacity for developing and applying learning models, methods, and measures
    • Lead functional and cross-functional teams in the integration of learning sciences into the development, implementation, and improvement of technology rich environments
    • Participate in the creation, application and integration of robust approaches to multimodal data (i.e., simultaneous data from multiple sources, including verbal reports, eye movements, log files and assessment results)
    • Participate in national and international research and scholarly contributions through research, publications, and presentations to enhance ACT’s visibility and reputation for thought leadership in the professional community
    • Seek out and participate in strong internal/external collaborative relationships and partnerships

     

     

    Qualifications

    Education:

     

    • Doctoral degree in learning sciences, developmental psychology, educational psychology, or related field;
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

     

    Experience:

    • A minimum of 6 years of demonstrated experience in application of learning sciences and/or cognitive sciences required
    • Research expertise in the learning sciences or related field
    • Fluency in learning theories
    • Knowledge of design-based research and basic psychometrics
    • Applied experience in designing assessments and learning environments
    • Experience in the development, presentation, and publication of high-quality scholarly contributions
    • Experience in learning progressions, learning sciences, and/or game-based learning
    • Experience in learning analytics techniques desirable

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

     

    • Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals, conduct presentations, and participate in relevant national and international research communities
    • Knowledge of learning sciences and research design
    • Lead research projects
    • Organize and present complex results to diverse audiences
    • Understand design principles and human-centered design methods
    • Set goals and priorities
    • Meet multiple deadlines
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
